Join ILAC and the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice on 9 September* at 15:00 – 16:30 CEST (9 AM EDT) for a webinar The Rule of Law in Haiti – Challenges and Opportunities. Informations en français ici.
*Please note the change of date. Due to the earthquake that occurred on 14 August, we are postponing the webinar until 9 September. We express our deepest condolences for the losses suffered by the people of Haiti and our greatest hopes for a rapid recovery from this terrible disaster.
Haiti is facing one of the most difficult moments in its history. Although the brutal murder of President Moise brought international attention to the rule of law in Haiti, the country had been struggling for years with unprecedented levels of violence, a constitutional crisis that has paralyzed most of its institutions, and a justice system that struggles to function in the midst of the multi-fold crisis. As a wave of protests rocked the country in 2019, ILAC and the Vance Center set out to study the main challenges to the rule of law in Haiti with a view to design a strategy of support to the justice sector and the legal profession. As part of this process, we conducted a series of interviews with various stakeholders in Haiti including the government, judges, court officials, bar associations, civil society organizations, as well as representatives of the international community. Recent events have made all too evident our key finding that Haiti urgently needs to rebuild the rule of law, including making the justice system more fair, effective, and transparent. To do so, civil society, legal and judicial professionals are calling for a “Haitian solution” through national dialogue and continued progress towards reforming the justice system, including speeding up the implementation of the legal aid program, legal reform to bring greater independence to the judiciary, and strengthening the bar associations.
Please join us on September 9th, 2021 at 9:00 am EDT for a webinar on The Rule of Law in Haiti: Challenges and Opportunities where we will present the report with conclusions and recommendations from our study. The webinar will also feature a discussion with key members of the Haitian justice system and legal profession as well as local civil society organizations.
Please note that the webinar will be held both in English and French.
